Caesar, sent the cavalry ahead, and took the lead of the six; behind them he placed all the geat of his army; when the cavalry crossed the river, they battled with the enemy's cavalry. They retreated back into the forest to their own and then back out of the forest to attack us. Our cavalry dared only to follow them to the edge of the forest. At the time, as soon as the six arrived, they put down their weapons and started to strengthen the camp. As soon as our army's equipment was seen by those hiding in the forest, they rushed forth with all their forces and attacked our cavalry. Because after the cavalry was easily driven back, with incredible speed they ran towards the river. Thus at the same time they were seen near the woods, in the river and among our troops. With the same haste they ran towards our camp and those who had been busy working.
Caesar had to do everything at once; he had to raise the flag, sound the trumpet, which ordered them to take arms;he had to recall the soldiers from their tasks; prepare the battle line. For a short time he delayed the attacks and the arrival of the enemy. Therefore, because of the proximity and speed of the enemy, the commanders did not wait for Caesar's orders, but did what they could on their own.
