This website can be pretty useful if you are still confused on how poets (such as Catullus) use meter in their poetry. It includes everything you need to know about dactyls, and how syllables can be long under certain conditions. Ellison is also mentioned in this PDF file. Elision can pretty confusing, considering that elision can eliminate a syllable in certain meters by combining two words into a larger, less pronounceable word. It is important to know when to allide because messing up on elision early in a line will most likely lead you to mess up the rest of the line. This website can help you determine good tricks of the trade of eliding and scansion in general.
