Togas were not the only clothing that Romans wore in ancient times. The toga was only used usually as a public display garment, while the tunic was more common in other situations where people wore clothes. Tunics were short woolen undergarments with short sleeves. It was usually worn openly by working men and slaves, though was commonly worn under togas in public or by itself in the home. Today, we might no wear tunics in these situations; instead we wear wife-beaters. Tunics are basically wife-beaters with sleeves.
