A sundial is a statue that measures daytime by the position of the sun, indicated by the shadow cast on the horizontal pedestal of the sundial. Usually a triangular shaped metal or stone protrudes from the dial so that the shadow of it may be cast on a engraved time on the pedestal. The designs rely on the sundial being aligned with the axis of the Earth's rotation. If such a sundial is to tell the correct time, the style must point towards the North.
