Catapaults!

Catapaults are large apparatuses that were (and still are) used commonly in warfare. These are able to hurl projectiles at adversaries at great distances without the use of gunpowder. The catapault was supposedly invented in 399 in the city of Syracuse during the reign of Dionysius I. The history of the crossbow and the catapault are closely itertwined; perhaps the crossbow was a forerunner for the later invented catapault.
