The Equestrian Order was the lower of the two aristocratic classes in Ancient Rome, the other being the Senatorial Order. The Equestrian Order was often associated with the top social classes in Roman society, and were often the wealthiest. Each citizen of the Roman militia comprised of their equipment measuring their wealth, so out of this most of the upper class provided cavalry because they could afford many horses. A member of the order was dubbed an eques, which in Latin meant anyone riding a horse. Possibly the use of knights in the class system of feudalism originated from this.
