Temple of Apollo

The Temple of Apollo Palatinus is an ancient temple built on Palatine Hill by Augustus dedicated to the god Apollo. This temple was promised by Octavian to his patron god Apollo (Augustus proved in his writings that he was a descendant of the gods) if he won the Battle of Naulochus in 36 BC against the Roman general Sextus Pompeius, and went into construction after he defeated Cleopatra an Marc Antony at the Battle of Actium. The temple was built on the sight of where a lightning bolt struck his property on Palatine. Now the temple lies in ruins, but has been excavated and many of its artifacts are preserved in museums.
