Flavius Belisarius was a general of the Eastern Roman empire, noted for many accomplishments. He was instrumental to Emperor Justinian's reconquering of the Mediterranean territory of the former Western Roman Empire (Italy), which had been lost less than a century ago. For receiving almost no support from Justinian, his military successes are often laudable in military history. He is said to been a blind begger later in life, having made so by an order by Justinian to have his eyes poked out. It is said that for the rest of his life he became a homeless beggar near the Pincian Gate of Rome.
